This works! ***UPDATED 2 YEARS LATER MAY 2014*****
By Amazon Customeron Aug 30, 2012
SEE ORIGINAL REVIEW FIRST below after the break *******UPDATE MAY 2014****** I decided to update this review nearly 2 years later, as I can shed some light on some lingering questions, linguistically speaking :) So, here goes. Two years later my biggest noticeable slip in the American accent remains the letter R, ah , my obstinate, unruly, AAAAAAAARRRR. Yep, I trill it. I know it's an alveolar flap really, but it slips in when I'm not noticing, that rogue rascal raining on my parade. (Ann would have added rambunctious, but that's too many R's ). I watch with stupidity as my 4 year old sails through 'rainbows and gardens' then '001a001a001a 001a 001a001a001a' without skipping a beat ( pronounced ramel and bahar, and they mean sand and sea, respectively) Ah well, that's about it, really. I've retained or improved on -nearly- everything else: Intonation is getting really good, pitch can still be a b*itch, liaisons are now decent, and the most striking example of further accent acquisition happened this morning . Someone was trying to sell me his lawn care service, over the phone, and I was trying to politely get rid of him. It's a Sunday, I'm standing outside an ICU room waiting to talk to family (I'm a doctor), and I wanna be done early today, ya know? Finally after the fourth no thank you from me, he hangs up. I hang up too, exclaiming ' Jesus H Christ !!' One second later, I burst out laughing at this. (On a more serious note, so CENTRAL is the R to all you Yanks that the 'American sound ' can be summarized in one self-repeating mantra : RhubarbRhubarbRhubarb001a! ( I use the term Yanks endearingly, by the way, and whenever I wanna tease my friend Steve) One last thing : There are a couple of comments on my review from 2 years ago that I've been once or twice half-tempted to address, but very often the best answer is none at all, as I like to read these comments 'for the lulz'. Now's that's INTERNET-slang! Look! I use it and I'm still gainfully employed! Geez. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************* *****ORIGINAL REVIEW AUGUST 2012****** A few months after finishing a 6-month course with an instructor, and using the second edition of this book, a man asked me for directions at the place where I work. Without pausing, I said: 'Whyncha come with me?' I lead him to were he was going, and then it suddenly dawned on me how much my speech pattern had changed. A year ago, I would've said accurately but very stiffly why-don't-you-come-with me. Accent training is more than just being able to produce individual words or discrete sounds; it's really the ability to combine words and phrases fluidly. I came to the US at the age of 24, and of course had an accent. Most speech pathologists/linguists agree that after a certain age, say 10, an acquired new language will retain 'an accent', ie a different way of producing sounds. Six years later, I was determined to test this theory. I was never particularly bothered by my (Arabic) accent, and rarely was I not understood, but the project took a scholarly, almost serious, tone to it. Would I be able to drop my accent? I had six months to find out, and I set a goal of attaining at least 95% perfection, meaning that my accent would deviate from a standard American accent less than 5% of the time. I used the second edition of this book during my six month run, but also reviewed this third edition in its entirety when it came out, eager to find what changed in the science (yes, it is a science) of accent training/acquisition. Much is improved and expanded on in this book, but the main themes remain the same: Pronunciation, intonation, voice quality (better clarified in this third edition), and, my favorite, linking, also known as liaisons. Different people will have different challenges. While I felt that I could produce many individual words perfectly and rarely had issues with stress or grammar, the production of whole phrases and the 'music' of the language itself with its accompanying nuances and staircase intonation etc etc , was my challenge. Phrases were broken; there was this choppy feel to how words were connected. It was fun listening to one's own accent change, and it did. I took a Versant online/phone test on my own when I felt I was ready, and.. scored a 76 out of a possible 80 in its pronunciation subset . (The test also has grades sentence mastery, vocabulary and fluency). That's an uncanny 95% (76/80). Should've aimed higher, haha. Now just as one could misplay a piano piece and hit a note instead of another, one could do just the same and 'revert' to an old accent. I guess it takes many months, possibly years for the new accent to become fully ingrained. Here's a quick example: it took me a while to get to use 'goda the park ' rather than go-to(pronounce the to)-the park. And I'm told intoxication might make you speak in your original accent, but I digress. Your words will 'blend' together when you learn the American Accent. The exercises in this book are neat, supplemented by a fantastic audio track in 5 CD's. Self conscious? Pop 'em in your car's CD player. (One unexpected thing I learned indirectly from this book is how people in different regions in the US speak differently, and I'm not even talking about the drawl of the southern accent or the distinctive Boston accent. I'm talking Chicago vs California! This'll all make you more aware of how words YOU make sound, and being able to change them accordingly.) The third edition also expands on nationality guides, something I found very useful when analyzing the differences in my Middle Eastern accent. (Far-east speakers may have different challenging words/letters as opposed to say, Spanish speakers, or African. This'll allow you to focus on the anomalies) So yes, you can change your accent, but you need to practice, practice, practice! The more you practice, the closer you'll get to it. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it, even for those just curious to know something about the American accent.

I immigrated to the US when I was 30 years old. In the past 20 years, I have always tried to reduce my native accent in speaking American English. My job requires me to talk to customers on the phone, to host web meetings and to give presentations in front of a large group of audiences. I had taken different classes to improve my accent until I found the second version of this book. I was amazed by the techniques described in the book such as voice quality, ups and downs, and peaks and valleys. I signed up for an evaluation then enrolled in 6-months of classes provided by the author's organization. I greatly improved after I received direct feedback on a weekly basis. It has been a life changing experience after I had changed my voice quality in speaking American English. Before I came across this book, my native speaker friends always told me to speak slowly and to raise my voice volume particularly on the phone. Actually, it is not that at all. After I listened to all of the tracks on the CDs more than twice, gradually, I applied the techniques from the book in my daily communication. I have continuously received positive feedback from my audiences. I don't need to speak slowly and word by word. It was painful for native speakers to listen to me when I spoke that way. As I am reading the third version, it has the outline of the techniques 'The American Sound' in Chapter 1 on Page 1 and 2. It is the summary of the techniques in the book. This is a great book for whoever wants to reduce his first language accent in speaking American English. I got my money's worth from the book and the class.
American Accent Training
This book changed my life by changing my perception of the American Accent. After moving to the U.S. it became critical for me to communicate orally at a similar level as the native speakers. If you want to understand and be able to replicate how Americans speak English then you REALLY need this book. That is especially the case if you, like me, have spent (many) years reading and listening American English but not living in the U.S. This book will open your ears, yes your ears! In several languages you can pronounce virtually everything right just by knowing how the words are written. As you may have noticed, that is not the case with American English. This book helps you to understand how it works and even, in general terms, why. Don't think that the American English follows no rules or that you are unable to learn and use them. Here you will find examples to understand the patterns and exercises to practice and incorporate them into your everyday speech. The author clearly knows her subject and has extensive PRACTICAL experience teaching English as Second Language (ESL) to people with different language backgrounds. It shows in her explanations of how and why. Don't miss 'The Miracle Technique'! nor how you can pronounce words and phrases the right way if you see them written the way they are said. It will blow you away! Something funny is that just 1 week after I started reading the book and doing the exercises, people around me noticed the difference! But make no mistakes, if you want to benefit from all what this book offers you need to take the time and effort to read/study the book and practice, practice, practice. After having read and used for some time the 2nd Edition of this book I decided, for professional reasons, to take the 6 months program they offer online and via skype ([..]) and have no regrets. My instructor is very helpful and knowledgeable and it definitely makes a huge difference having someone guiding and correcting you as you improve your skills. Living in a new culture and mastering a foreign language is an exciting journey. Since I found this book, I knew it would be my best companion here in the U.S. Make it yours!
Let me first start by saying that I am American and I found this book to be extremely useful! Growing up in the south I never realized I even had an accent until I moved across the country to Los Angeles. That is when I began to feel as though my accent was holding me back in terms of my career. I knew if I wanted to succeed in my highly competitive profession I would have have to mainstream the way I speak. This book, along with the audio CDs has helped me to do just that. I highly recommend it!

If you want to speak English like Americans, this is the book for you!
By Shawn Panon Mar 25, 2013
This is my personal story and it is a little bit long but true. This may apply to many people like me who learned English mainly in another country as second language. After many years of study of English as my second language, I became very confident of my English including listening, speaking, reading and writing since I took TOEFL and GRE with high score until an incident happened to me after I started to work for a large company. I called a colleague one day and left a voice message for him. When he replied my message and he also forwarded the message I left for him, which means I heard the voice message left by myself originally. My feeling was extremely complex at the moment when I heard my message. I could not believe that this is how I spoke English, which was still memorable now. This incident made me realize that my English may be enough for my current job; however, it is definitely not an enjoyable thing to listen to. After this incident, I spent couple months to investigate what my English really sound like by recording my own talk at different real-life situations. My conclusion is that although I studied English for many years, to listen to my speaking is not an enjoyable thing at all. It is very possible that in many instances native speakers might not understand me at all (I used to be unhappy when people asked me to repeat before). Since then, I was frustrated for long time because I understood my problem and wanted to improve my English but I do not know how to do it. My least goal is to let native speakers understand me without any difficulty. My situation changed until I found the book 'American Accent Training' by Ann Cook. Back then, it was second version. I like this book because this book helped me understand my problem, which is not only pronunciation but also intonation, voice quality, and liaison. For example, it is hard for me back then to tell the difference of these pairs: beach vs. bitch, Tim vs. Team, Sheet vs. s***, met vs. mate, leave vs. live, etc. As you know, if you could not tell these words clearly one from another, you can make yourself very confusing to listeners in certain occasions. Another good thing about this book is that for people from different countries, Ann Cook figure out the major problems they may have in common and give guidance to readers on what you need to focus on. I do not know whether or not Ann spoke all of these languages and I had no idea how she figured all these out; however, I tested those parts for Chinese and Japanese, they are true! (I spoke Chinese and Japanese). Another thing I want to say is that this is book only, nothing else. If you buy this book and put it on the shelf, you will not benefit from it even after three years. We are fortunate that Ann Cook did her parts to write this book, but you need to work on it by using this book as a guidance. I spent last eighteen months to improve my pronunciation, and I can feel that the times being asked to repeat myself dropped drastically. And I do not think I have problem on my pronunciation now. I just got third version of this book recently and am working on intonation and liaison. I firmly believe I will really sound like American (at least closer to them) in near future.
As a certified ESL teacher, I've been using the 2nd edition of this book and the AAT Grammar book for years with great success. The restructuring of the 3rd edition has made it even easier to use. Whether your goal is to 'speak like an American,' or to 'be understood without having to repeat yourself multiple times,' this program can help you to achieve your goal. In addition to the clear and concise instructions in the book, the CDs are great for people who don't have the benefit of English immersion. If you're not in a position that allows you to talk to native speakers of American English on a daily basis, you can listen to the CDs in your car or transfer them to your iPod or phone, so that you can constantly be exposed to the patterns of American 'speech music' while on the go. I have a student who listens to the CDs while doing research in his lab, since he is mostly silent during the day, and otherwise wouldn't get any exposure to American English except during our weekly lesson. Another student took the recordings with him on a ski trip. He had an epiphany about his breathing technique, which greatly affected his voice quality, while waiting for the chair lift! The results were amazing. From his current, deep, resonant voice, you would never know it was the same person who had begun using the book 6 months ago. I recommend this book as a great resource for both English language learners and teachers of English as a second language. Dr. L. Enzie
I am a French-Canadian Actor. For years I have tried to reduce my accent (Think: Justin Timberlake in 'The love Guru' Times 10). I tried private coaching, accent reduction techniques. If they helped me to some extent, nothing compared to Ann Cook's American Accent Training. I can declare I learned more in ONE WEEK with this method than I did with all the other combined techniques and class I took before! When you learn English as a second language, they just want to make sure you can understand and communicate. What they do not teach you is how to be UNDERSTOOD. A French Canadian does not know the sound 'th' for instance. It simply does not exist in French. So when we talk, we go 'I tink dis is de right decision!'. And that's only one example. This book and the CDs cover everything you need to learn in order to sound like a native American. You'll be taken by the hand, and before you know it, people will not ask you to repeat what you've just said all the time. They will stop asking you 'Where are you from?' In fact, they will not give a second thought about your accent.because it will be gone. This book comes with 5 CDs. At that price, with all the material included, it is simply an unbeatable value.
This book really helped my accent. It is self-explanatory, brief and laconic .comes with 5 cds that reads the book and tells the correct pronunciation. very good book if you are serious about learning and ready to follow the instructions.
This new book covers a wide spectrum of American English Accent requirements. Covering this book will not only help students to acquire native accent but also help them improve other language skills such as listening and writing. Quality of accompanying CDs is unmatched and it is a scientific and step by step guide to success. This book works best if student takes a class room training course with an experienced instructor from AAT but self-training will also help a lot.
I just received my copy of the third edition of American Accent Training from Amazon. As an ESL instructor, I've actually been using this book since the first edition --- yes, I'm old! But hopefully with age has come some wisdom, and I definitely think that's the case with AAT's third edition. It's clear that the author listened to student feedback that pronunciation should be at the beginning of the book and Ann Cook has completely restructured the book with that in mind. Simply from an aesthetic perspective, I have to say I really like the clean design of this book, from the cover and throughout the contents. And from a green aspect, I appreciate that it doesn't come in that big box that the second edition came in. Yet this third edition still manages to cram as much and more linguistic information into a leaner presentation. I really like that the psychology of picking up and using the accent is addressed with techniques to make the process more comfortable. There are still those great CDs, and this time it seems like there are more voices for my students to emulate. As an instructor, I keep abreast of all these types of publications. And it seems like when everyone has copied Ms. Cook and there are lots of imitations being published using her methodology, she skips a couple of steps ahead and comes up with brand-new ideas to help my students learn a typical American accent.
The best American Accent material I have ever come across.

Before I start with the review, here is a list of books+CD sets that I used to learn the American accent from, aside from the American Accent Training by Ann Cook. 1. Mastering the American Accent by Lisa Mojsin 2. The American Accent Guide by M.S. Beverly A. Lujan 3. Improve Your American English Accent by Charlsie Childs After trying all those, I can unequivocally say that this book+CDs just blows the rest of the competition out of the water. All the books follow a certain pattern. It teaches you vowel and consonant pronunciations which is very important and is one of the basic building blocks to having a beautiful accent. Then they teach you word stress and intonation, which again is very important. Finally, they teach you linking and contractions to make you sound like a native speaker. That's the basic structure that all the books follow including this one. But what AAT does that no other books do is teach you all lowdown on how the American accent actually works under the hood. It gives you all the quick and dirty tips and tricks that other books won't even acknowledge they exist. Many Americans have complimented me on my accent. In fact one of the American ESL teacher wouldn't leave me alone until I told her what the 'secret' of my accent was. I am not perfect though - I still am working on getting my voiced 'th' sound perfect and using more contractions and linking to sound like a true native American. You know what's funny? I've never been to America. I just wanted to have a standard accent. I might as well have learned British, had there been such fabulous material that teaches you British accent. This book isn't perfect either, but it's the closest to perfection that any material currently available on American accent has come. I wish there were more examples of and exercises on linking. I am watching EnglishWithStacy Youtube channel to learn advanced linking, and it's free. If you want to be perfect in something, you can't just rely on one source. You have to try many different material. But if you don't have the time and the resources and you would like just one book to learn the American Accent from, then this has to be it.
The most amazing program in American Accent Training
By Mike Zon Mar 22, 2014
I am 27. I moved to Canada from China four years ago. I brought the book one year ago because people had a really hard time understanding my English. It is so well written, organized and insightful. It provides a complete guide to master American Accent. I took my time to understand the material and read after the CDs. Over just two months, my accent had improved a lot and people started to understand my English. Then my work kept me busy and I had to put it aside. But I rarely had the problem being understood by others since then. Eight weeks ago, I started to think about advancing my career, but I found my accent actually held me back. I thought it would be helpful if I could get someone to teach me. So I decided to take a training program from American Accent Training company operated by Ann Cook. It worded so well. Now I am 7 weeks into the program. I find this is the most amazing course I have taken. Each week, my instructor helped me go through parts of the book patiently, identified my problems and gave me a lot of tips for me to practice. I also did some writing every week and my instructor would revise it and ask me to read it aloud for her to identify my problem. To be perfect in accent is indeed very challenging. But with the help of this program, I have so much confidence. This is the first time in my life I realize something perfect is really achievable. After each class, I worked very hard on my problems by applying the techniques. I tried to correct any words I mispronounced in any conversations. I recorded myself, listened back, recorded again and listened back. There were moments that I felt that I would not get some certain sounds correctly. But each time I had such a trouble, I listened to the chapter 2 of the book again. There are words there that really motivate me: 'Think back in your life to a time when persistence paid off. ' 'Own that, it's yours' Those sentences just accompany my accent training all the time. No matter how people tell me that it is impossible to speak without accent, I don't believe it. If one person can make it, with right techniques and constant practice, everyone can achieve it!!! I practice my pronunciation on the bus, in the kitchen, in the washroom.. In the evening, I even shouted it out in the street! It not only about my English, but the accent training also helps me deal with every difficult problem and challenging task in my life. Nothing is insurmountable if we are tackling it little by little. I really want to thank Ann Cook and my instructor for their help! My accent has improved a lot in just 7 weeks. I am very confident that in just a few weeks, I will be able to speak without Chinese accent. I also have some tips to provide here for anyone who is studying this book: 1. If you feel the CDs is fast for you to catch individual sound, you can use some software to slow the CDs down. I used this method a lot if I couldn't hear individual sound clearly. Just search it online. 2. Always record yourself, listen back and compare. If you have the software to slow your recording down, you can even do a better comparison of your pronunciation to your references (CDs or your own materials). Pay attention to how you drop or misinterpret certain sounds. 3. Listen to the book as many times as you can. After many times, you can actually speak simultaneously with the CDs without looking at the book. If you can't speak it aloud, just move your tongue and lips. Muscle has its memory, the more you repeat it, the more agile they will be. You need an American speech muscle. 4. Take note of your weakness, write a sticky note and paste it anywhere you can see every day. Cross them out when you really get through them. Practice them every day, every day, every day. If you can't get certain sound, you can download individual word and listen to just one word hundreds and even thousands of time. 5. Finally, with good instruction(if possible) and right techniques provided in the book, repeat, repeat and repeat. If you don't get it the first time, ask someone, look online, talk to your instructor and repeat it again and then again. PRACTICE, PRACTICE AND NEVER NEVER GIVE IT UP UNTIL IT IS PERFECT. Always think about a moment in the past of your life when persistent paid off. And your practice will really pay off it you are persistent and stick to the techniques and individual sounds. I also have a funny story of my american accent training. Usually I listen to your CDs when I am jogging. So my iphone running application is bind to American Accent Training. Last weekend, I participated St Patrica 10K running race. I put my iphone in the back pocket of my running pants, which was hard for me to reach. I didn't put on earphones. When I started my race, because of the vibration, the running application in iphone started. I didn't have chance to turn it off during the whole race. So it just kept playing your CDs aloud all the way!!! But it really helped my running. There were several moments, I felt so hard to maintain my speed to finish the race. But the CDs kept me going towards the finishing line. Hope everyone will enjoy the book.
This course isn't perfect, but it's one of the only resources I've used that seems to be universally helpful and appreciated by my students. Among my top 5 of all time. You may hate the notation she uses for phonemes, you may hate that there aren't more pictures, you may even hate her voice (seems impossible, she's very pleasant to listen to).. but the course achieves its purpose. Learners do improve their accent and their listening comprehension if they follow through with the exercises. It's also enjoyable and fairly painless to teach. Again, very few ESL resources manage to be enjoyable for the learner and teacher, in my experience. Thanks for this resource, Ann Cook! And you're welcome for helping you sell an additional ~200 units over the past few years. :)
I bought this book to use with ESL students. I find that it's very text-heavy; there are pages of explanations without much opportunity for hands-on (tongues-on?) practice. The CDs are OK, but as another reviewer noted, they move quickly, without giving the listener a chance to repeat. This would probably be a good book for someone who has near-native comprehension skills and already knows the basics of pronunciation, but wants to reduce his accent. Not so good for someone whose pronunciation is hard to understand, or who would have trouble reading and processing huge chunks of fairly technical text.
This book explains how to make sound like Americans, but there is no visual in it. It says you pinch your nose and make ae than it says still pinching your nose and make a sound. I wish this book has some videos for at least for the sounds not for sentences. As a second language learner I found it pretty hard for me. Otherwise, this is good book but I would no recommend it to someone who wants to improve American accent.
My accent improved and everybody who I recommended this book to said the same. I did quite an extensive reasearch on American accent training and for the money it's the best method out there. I did borrow a copy at the local library to review it, but I bought my own copy to practice. Keep in mind that improving your accent requires a lot of practice, it's not a magic wand, it's just a method to get better every day and speak more clearly to be understood.
Innovative, creatively inspired, practical - and written with wit and wry humor, too. Ann Cook has dissected and then packaged a remarkable program based on the understanding of the rhythms and intonations in the American accent. We speak in melodic and rhythmic phrases – simply learning to pronounce individual words is akin to only playing individual notes as opposed to speaking in sound groups (spoken musical phrases). My ESL and accent students love the exercises, and after they “get it” they’re amazed. A great, great resource and approach. It changed forever how I thought about the language that I love to speak, study and teach. Doc Stull
and I can already see that people understand me better. I feel much more confident now when speaking ..
By Faridon Jun 03, 2015
This is outstanding! I have used it for about 4 weeks now, and I can already see that people understand me better. I feel much more confident now when speaking on phone conference calls (I used to refrain from speaking on conference calls fearing that people will not understand my accent). I received the 3rd edition; the CDs are wrapped in plastic, and there are NO scratches. I wish I knew about this training years earlier.
I have bought several copies of the book because my international visitors like them and want to take them home
By Not Shyon Nov 29, 2014
Very helpful book. The reader's voice is clear and friendly. I have bought several copies of the book because my international visitors like them and want to take them home. Speaking good American English is a great challenge to those whose teachers struggle with pronounciation themselves. This book offers welcome help.
My friend is very satrisfied with this purchase. I wanted to give her a book that helps with phonemic analysis of english. This is NOT the same as phonics; phonemic analysis helps the learner hear the differences between the sounds of the English language (in this case); there are numerous diagrams that also assist the learner in making the sounds correctly, which is precisely what she wanted. I am impressed by her progress in a short period of time, and her increase in self-esteem that accompanies improved pronunciation of English. Many excellent resources accompany this package, including a phone contact for assistance. Well worth the money.
As native German speaker, I was looking for a tutorial to self-train American pronounciation and accent to overcome the typical German style in American English. Very good tool, tutorial and training, still hard to learn but I will not give-up..
Really good but honestly the lady speaks way to fast.. Like no one that I ever talk to speaks that fast unless they are in a rush, I wish I could slow it down a little bit to get the pronunciation better specially of new vowels and sounds that im unfamiliar with, besides that its a good book
Must give full stars for this book. Very organized and easy to understand. I love that they record everything on the book so I can listen to the CD while driving.
Great! I am very happy with my purchase. I recommend this book and cd's to everyone who wants to get an American Accent.
I love this book! I listen to the audio everyday while driving to work! It is very comprehensive. I wish the author would make new CDs with more accent training exercises!!
I DID NOT WORK PROPERLY. I NEED A REFUND PLEASE. THANK YOU.
Beneficial book. We are still here download torrent.
narrators speak too fast. I can't follow (repeat after) them.
This book is very good and very easy for whoever is learning English as a second language and want to reduce accent. i tried many books before but this one is very different and also very easy to learn. the customer service is very great. love it.
I practice English speaking and pronouncing with this book for few weeks. Speaking English became a easier thing to me. My American friends and professors told me that my English is improved and more fluent now. I find that speaking English is not so difficult as I thought before after I found this book.
