Description

Metroidvania is a subgenre of platforming games focused on guided non-linearity and utility-based exploration. The term, coined by video game critic Jeremy Perish, is a portmanteau of Metroid and Castlevania. Typical features of this subgenre include, but are not limited to, progressively revealed minimaps, backtracking, and difficult boss fights.

Ancestors

The Metroid and Castlevania formulae were certainly innovative for their time. Their unique bents on storytelling, graphics, and gameplay made them instant classics. Nevertheless, both can be seen as derivative cases, benefitting from a multitude of prototypical ancestors. These ancestors helped to establish the gaming tropes that would later become signatures of the Metroidvania genre.

Metroidvania often refers to two specific games. The Metroid- half refers to the 1994 SNES title, Super Metroid, while the -vania half refers to the 1997 Playstation title, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. These two games would become the parents of a new generation of action-platformers.

Offspring

Following the success of Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of Night, the developers for each game saw a prolific period from 2000-2008, releasing games nearly every year. These eight years would define the genre that would later become the focus for many crowd-funded projects by independent game developers, including the still unreleased and most anticipated Metroidvania, Chasm.

Variations

The tropes established by the prototypical ancestors have become so influential on gaming that developers experiment with their application in a variety of genres. This makes for a handful of games that feel Metroidvania-like without being dogmatic in their execution. Not coincidentally, these games cause the most debate about whether they are or are not Metroidvanian in design. This breaking down of the Metroidvania formula could help extend the life of the genre, by fusing some of its elements with other popular genres (e.g. Rogue-like, Procedurally generated Dungeon Crawler, etc).
